Premium Audio and Radar Upgrade for Anchorage Porsche Cayman

12/16/2019 By John Schwartz

Porsche StereoA long-time client of Perfectionist Auto Sound & Security in Anchorage recently dropped by the store to inquire about upgrading the stereo system in his 2007 Porsche Cayman. He wanted the audio system in the Cayman to play louder, deliver smoother frequency response and produce more bass. The client also wanted a high-performance radar detector and laser defense system. After a thorough inspection of the vehicle, our team put together a bespoke solution that would meet the client’s expectations.

Porsche Cayman Stereo System Upgrade

The first step was to remove the majority of the interior from the vehicle so our technicians could run Stinger speaker cables and Digital Designs interconnects. Once the wiring was in place, we treated the floor, cargo area and doors of the vehicle with sound deadening to reduce noise transfer and improve the performance of the stereo.

Next, we installed a Pioneer AVIC-W8500NEX multimedia receiver in the dash. This premium source unit features a 7-inch capacitive-touch display and includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The smartphone features allow the client to use the voice recognition technology built into his phone to make calls, send text messages and choose from dozens of entertainment options.

Audiofrog Speaker Upgrades

The most-important part of an audio system upgrade is the front speakers. This client chose a set of Audiofrog GB60 woofers and GB10 tweeters for the system. Our fabrication team created custom mounting adapters out of HDPE plastic to attach the new speakers to the factory mounting point in the door. A set of Morel Tempo Ultra Integra 5.25-inch speakers in the rear speaker locations helps wrap the sound around the driver.

System Subwoofers and Amplifiers

The electronics were mounted in the front boot.

After building a shallow enclosure for a pair of Audiomobile GTS-Series 10-inch subwoofers, the guys set to work on the custom trim panels. They mounted the woofers to a panel that is wrapped in perforated gray vinyl. Our team used our Glowforge laser to create a Porsche emblem in a piece of acrylic plastic. The emblem is centered between the subwoofers, and we built up the area around the emblem for a smooth, finished look.

The trim panel around the subwoofers features a pair of inserts at the rear of the vehicle that mimic the accent lines on the factory plastic panels. To continue the theme, we added raised sections to the rear edge of the panel to match those in the aluminum trim at the back of the cargo area. We also added a removable panel with a custom laser-etched badge to make it easy to access the engine oil and coolant fill points.

The sound system in this Porsche is powered by a pair of Digital Designs amplifiers and a digital signal processor. A D6.500 six-channel amp powers the woofers and tweeters in the doors and the rear speakers, while a DM1000a monoblock feeds each of the subwoofers with 500 watts of power.

A Digital Designs DSI-2 signal processor handles dividing the audio signal from the Pioneer radio into appropriate frequency ranges for each speaker. We also set the signal delays and equalization for each channel to produce smooth and natural sound with excellent imaging.

Laser Defusers were added to the front corners of the car.

Our team integrated a K40 RL360i radar detector and laser defense system into the Porsche to protect the driver from getting speeding tickets. We mounted the front and rear radar antennae to the chassis of the vehicle, using custom aluminum brackets. We concealed the radar antennae behind the plastic bumper covers and mounted a pair of Laser Defusers just above the outside air inlets in the front bumper. These Defusers prevent officers from measuring the vehicle speed using LIDAR until the client can confirm speed and cancel the scrambled laser signal transmission.

European Car Upgrade Specialists

With the upgraded stereo system dialed in and the radar and laser system tested, it was time for the owner of this cool Porsche Cayman to return to Perfectionist Auto Sound & Security to pick up the vehicle. The client was happy with the upgrades and anxious to get out on the road to try them out.

Anchorage Client Adds Ford F-150 Radar and Laser System

04/28/2017 By John Schwartz

F-150 RadarA client from Anchorage, Alaska, had come to Perfectionist Auto Sound and Security to have a remote starter installed in his 2008 Roush Edition Ford F-150. When he came to pick up the truck, we started talking, and he mentioned he also had a Roush Mustang. He clearly likes quick vehicles. We had just returned from a K40 Electronics training session, so we mentioned some of the cool features of the RL360i system. After explaining how everything worked, the client was on board with the F-150 radar and laser plan, but he needed the work done quickly as he was selling his house and moving down south.

K40 System Installation

The front laser defusers are nestled in-between the bumper and grille.

James Hunt, one of our elite installation technicians, started the project by removing the front bumper. He needed as much access as possible to mount the pair of K40 Defuser LTS g5 transponders in the gap between the bumper and the front grill trim. He ensured that the transponders were perfectly level and aimed directly forward for maximum range and reliability. He also mounted the radar receiver from the RL360i kit behind the plastic bumper cover. Plastic has no effect on radar waves. But it does on LIDAR diffusing.

At the rear of the vehicle, we used a K40 Defuser g5 license plate frame system. This cast frame mounts to the factory license plate mounting points and includes a g5 laser transponder. James mounted the rear radar receiver under the bumper. The trailer hitch protects the radar receiver from damage.

James mounted the warning LEDs on either side of the center console. He hid the warning buzzer under the dash. As always, all wiring is protected with Tesa cloth tape, and all electrical connections were soldered where applicable.

K40 Ticket-Free Guarantee

F-150 Radar
In the event of a ticket, K40 will reimburse the client, how’s that for service?

Since 1985, K40 Electronics has offered a program called the Ticket-Free Guarantee. K40 will reimburse the owner the cost of the speeding ticket if they own a K40 system. If the client were to get a ticket, all he has to do is send K40 a copy of the ticket, proof of payment and the receipt for the purchase of the system. K40 also offers amazing consumer support and qualification with their K40 Consult service.

Pioneer AppRadio Upgrade

F-150 Radar
The Pioneer AppRadio gives the client control of his smartphone from the dash.

The client wanted a radio that he could use with his iPhone. We installed a Pioneer SPH-DA120 AppRadio 4 in the truck using a dash kit, mounting harness and antenna adapter from Best Kits. We ran the USB cable into the glove box so the client could connect his iPhone to use Apple CarPlay.

F-150 Radar System A Hit With the Client

The client was thrilled with our work and ability to meet his tight deadline. We managed to complete three days of work in less than two. The client was thrilled we met and exceeded his goals!

The Advantages of a Custom-installed Laser and Radar Detector System

08/30/2016 By John Schwartz

Laser And Radar DetectorChances are, you know the term “radar detector.” It is a portable device that attaches to your windshield, plugs into your cigarette lighter, and acts as a laser and radar detector. They help you avoid the cost and inconvenience that comes with getting a speeding ticket. Perfectionist Auto Sound and Security in Anchorage sells K40, the leader in this category.

Custom Installation Takes Performance To A Whole New Level

Did you know there are such things as custom-installed laser and radar detectors? Many people have never heard of them. If you are in the market for something to protect you from tickets, this may be the perfect technology for you.

There are some distinct differences between portable and installed units. Follow along as we present the advantages of a custom-installed radar detector to you.

Everything Is Hidden

Laser And Radar Detector-3Let’s start with the obvious. With a custom-installed radar detector, there won’t be anything hanging from your windshield or sitting on your dash. That gives you two instant advantages. First, you eliminate the whole “smash and grab” problem of people breaking into your vehicle to steal your detector. Second, there is nothing for the authorities to see in the unfortunate event of getting pulled over. Do you think you can talk yourself out of a ticket with a radar detector in plain view? Didn’t think so. A custom-installed unit is discreetly designed into your vehicle, making it practically invisible, eliminating the two issues with a portable model.

Performance Is King

Why buy a radar detector? To avoid a speeding ticket. You don’t want the ultimate in protection? The K40 custom-installed units come with the highest-performing radar receivers available and aren’t limited to a small housing, so they can be packed with the best parts available. The RL360i even includes two receivers – one in front of the vehicle and a second one in the rear.

Laser Defusion, Not Detection

Laser And Radar DetectorPortable units use laser detectors, which are a waste of time. You see, a laser gun can pick a vehicle out of a crowded road. When you get hit, it is too late. Our custom systems use laser defusers, giving you effective protection. When your vehicle gets hit with laser, the system fires powerful beams of light back at the gun, preventing it from getting a reading. Now you have precious time to slow down and avoid a ticket.

Customization Is King

When you get a K40 system from us, you are in the driver’s seat. Our highly trained staff will work with you to design the best solution for your needs. Do you need multiple front laser defusers? No problem. Maybe you want rear laser? Sure. Only need front radar? We can do that.

We invite you to stop by Perfectionist Auto Sound and Security in Anchorage and learn more about this great technology.
